ArizonaA legal immigration advocate is pessimistic about how well Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano would do as Homeland Security Secretary.

According to Rick Oltman of Californians for Population Stabilization, Napolitano has at best shown reluctant support for border enforcement during her tenure in office. Now she is a leading contender for the job of Homeland Security Secretary in Barack Obama's administration -- based on the efforts her state has made in battling illegal immigration. The mainstream media has had a positive reaction to the news.

Napolitano's selection has been praised by staunch pro-illegal alien groups, like the American Immigration Lawyers Association, the National Council of La Raza, and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

Howbeit, pro-enforcement groups have been more skeptical. Oltman says she has benefitted from Arizona's get tough approach to illegal immigration.

"Her record has been one of half measures. But the success of Arizona in other areas to deal with things makes it look as if she is a tough immigration and border security advocate," he adds.

Oltman says "…[w]e're dealing with smoking mirrors anyway so why not select a governor whose state is doing a good job of dealing with illegal immigration in spite of leadership at the top."
