Maryland is the latest state to consider a pPersonhood amendment.
In Maryland, the only way to get a proposed constitutional amendment on the ballot is through approval by the legislature. Johanna Dasteel of the American Life League says the purpose of the personhood amendment is simple. "It's designed to grant personhood to all human beings -- so all the rights and privileges that come along with being considered a person," she explains. The amendment would define personhood from the biological beginning, regardless of the method of reproduction. Dasteel has discussed the issue with people throughout the country, including Maryland. "Most people are inclined to say yes, all human beings are persons, and inherently understand the danger of ever excluding any class of human beings from their personhood and from the protections of the state," she points out. While pro-lifers in North Dakota and Montana are also working on personhood amendments, a similar effort is taking place in another arena. "We're looking for a human personhood amendment to be introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives," Dasteel adds. The amendment is designed to eventually overturn Roe v. Wade, the 1973 Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion. American Life League has endorsed the Maryland amendment.
