A Republican congressman says Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano should be committed to stopping the flow of illegal drugs and illegal immigrants from Mexico, instead of worrying about intercepting American guns and drug money that illegally enter Mexico.
During a recent three-day trip, Napolitano toured U.S. ports of entry and met with Mexican leaders on ways to combat drug violence. The trip highlighted Napolitano's recent announcements that DHS will shift resources to the U.S.-Mexico border to better support ongoing efforts to quell the southbound gun and money trafficking that fuels cartel violence. But Congressman Steve King (R-Iowa) says the Homeland Security secretary is shifting resources away from worksite enforcement in order to use resources on a job Mexico should be doing. "The fear of guns and money going south, and that we now should put Border Patrol down there to stop the flow of things going south -- that's something Mexico's got to help us one way or another," he contends. "And I don't think we have an administration here that has the conviction to enforce immigration law when Janet Napolitano suspended these worksite enforcements." King also believes DHS needs to get serious about completing a border fence along the U.S.-Mexico frontier. "I would build the fence. I would double it up where we need to, and I would add the virtual [fence] on there to help out," he adds. "And I don't claim we need 2,000 miles of fence, but I just declare that we should build it until they stop going around the end." If Secretary Napolitano is serious about reducing border violence, King says she will commit to completing the border fence and prosecuting both American employers and illegal immigrants who break U.S. law.
