Wisc. governor ignoring voters on marriage issue

Gov. Jim Doyle (Wisconsin)More than two years ago, voters in Wisconsin chose to defend the one-man/one-woman definition of marriage. Now their governor has proposed in his newest budget to have a statewide same-gender domestic-partner registration.

Julaine Appling of Wisconsin Family Action tells OneNewsNow that under Governor Jim Doyle's plan, same-gender pairs would have to meet the same requirements of heterosexual couples wishing to get married.

"Be the right age, not be already married, not getting involved with anyone closer than a second cousin. The price for the certificate is the same," she notes. "And then [the governor] also gave between 40 and 50 benefits that up to this point have been reserved specifically for legally married couples in this state."

"[In] November of 2006, with a nearly 60-percent vote, the people of Wisconsin said that we want the name 'marriage' reserved and the word 'marriage' reserved for one man and one woman," Appling emphasizes. "And [Wisconsin voters] also don't want look-alike marriage or marriage by another name to come in here and undermine the institution of marriage."

Appling says the governor's actions are contrary to the public will, so they are looking into possible legal remedies.
