There is a new angle in the fight against the U.N. Convention on the Rights of the Child.
The treaty was signed by the U.S. during the Clinton administration. However the treaty was never ratified and, therefore, holds no legal clout. But opponents of the treaty fear that liberals will try to have the treaty ratified during Obama's presidency. They say if that happens, then parental rights in many areas will be trumped by the courts. According to Mike Farris of ParentalRights.org, if ratified the treaty could infringe on Second Amendment rights. "They make the argument that all guns -- whether they're in the context of a war or in the context of a peaceful nation or people just have guns in private ownership -- ...are dangerous to children," he notes. "And as a consequence, they are calling on governments to obey their human rights obligations and to make it difficult if not impossible for private citizens to own guns." Farris says a constitutional amendment that would circumvent the treaty currently has 89 sponsors, but they need 270 votes in order for the amendment to pass.
