The Texas director of Americans for Prosperity says President Obama's new CAFÉ standards will drive up the price of automobiles.
Obama wants to raise the Cooperate Average Fuel Economy standard to 35.5 miles per gallon (view video news report). Car manufacturers have stated that they are willing to work with the administration, but Peggy Venable of Americans for Prosperity says that is no surprise. "Since we bailed them out and basically the federal government is running them...I would suggest that, yes, of course he would hope to have buy-in from them," she says. Venable believes that the new standards should be consumer-driven and not mandated by government. "But I think what it's going to do is simply drive the cost of automobiles up," she offers. According to an AP report, the new standards could cost consumers $1,300 per car. Carol Browner, Obama's energy and climate director, calls the move "historic" and "overdue."
