Blame point fingersA retired naval commander says President Barack Obama said nothing new in a recent speech regarding national security.

Kirk Lippold, the former commander of the USS Cole and senior military fellow at Military Families United, says continuing to blame the Bush administration is not showing leadership. He believes President Obama's speech regarding the proposed closure of the Guantanamo Bay detention center clearly demonstrates the president's failure to comprehend the complexity of the issue.

Lippold says after all the talk, the administration has failed to come up with a plan on the future of the Gitmo detainees. "The president -- despite everything he said very eloquently -- did not lay out any procedures for how he intended to close Guantanamo Bay on his one-year timeline," he points out.

Kirk LippoldThe president needs to stop playing the blame game, according to Lippold. "If he didn't want to deal with the legacy that he had been left with, if he didn't want to fix the mess that he claims he was left with, then he needed to have seriously considered whether or not to assume the responsibility that he has today," he contends. "Leaders don't blame; they lead."

It is time for Obama to stop blaming and start leading America forward, Lippold concludes.
