healthcare reformA Republican member of the House Ways and Means Committee says America can't afford to pay for the Democrats' government-run healthcare plan, just like it couldn't afford to pay for the stimulus and cap-and-trade bills.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-California) stated recently that the American people back Democrats' trillion-dollar healthcare plan, which will create $550 billion in new taxes over 10 years. "Over the coming days, Congress will continue working with President Obama to provide stable prices, secure coverage, and quality care for all Americans," Pelosi said. "We're very pleased we have the support not only of the doctors, but as you saw with President Obama the other day, the nurses -- and we certainly have the support of the American people."

Congressman Kevin Brady (R-Texas), a member of the House Ways and Means Committee, says the majority in Congress is bent on passing the legislation before July 31.

Rep. Kevin Brady (R-Texas)"They're trying to rush this through without members being able to read it, before we leave for the August break, before members have to go back and face their constituents during the month of August," he contends. "And on the Ways and Means Committee, we got this 1,100-page bill, the final version of it, at midnight and started to consider it at 10:00 the next morning. No one knows what the price tag is. No one knows how it works. It's frightening."

Representative Brady instructed the Joint Economic Committee staff to go through the House healthcare bill provision by provision, and lay out all the new programs, mandates, commissions, and agencies in the form of an organizational flow chart. According to Brady, the new bureaucracy that would be created to control healthcare is "scary."
