A bill under the guise of reducing abortion could actually do the opposite.
LifeNews.com reports Congressmen Tim Ryan (D-Ohio), a former pro-lifer who abandoned his views and was subsequently kicked off the board of Democrats for Life of America, and Representative Rose DeLauro (D-Connecticut), a former staff of NARAL, have introduced a bill being touted as pro-life legislation but is being called a "bailout for the abortion industry." (More details) According to Douglas Johnson of the National Right to Life Committee, the $647-million "Reducing the Need for Abortions Initiative" does not live up to its name. "It's authored by a former leader of Emily's List, which is a major pro-abortion political action committee, and another Democratic congressman who has voted even for public funding of abortions," he notes. "The actual provisions of the bill -- once you get past the label -- would provide additional federal funding to groups like Planned Parenthood, the nation's major abortion-provider. So in summary, this is really a bill intended to provide political cover for pro-abortion politicians and financial gains for the abortion industry." Congressman Chris Smith (R-New Jersey) said pro-life lawmakers will not support the measure because federal funding will go to abortion centers where they "talk contraception" in one room and "kill your baby" in another. Conservative columnist Michelle Malkin describes the bill's name as the "Orwellian title of the day." Johnson says the bill provides yet another reason for people to contact Capitol Hill and urge congressional representatives to oppose federal funding of abortion.
