A Washington-based gun rights group says Democrats' House and Senate healthcare bills constitute a huge back-door threat to Second Amendment rights.
Gun Owners of America (GOA) is warning that the healthcare bills being considered in Congress would allow the Obama administration to compile Americans' medical information and put it into a large government database. According to GOA spokesman Erich Pratt, that information could then be used to deny gun owners the right to own and carry a gun. "Basically, this ObamaCare would mistreat the rest of the country the way our government has already mistreated its veterans -- denying thousands upon thousands of them the right to own a gun because they're supposedly mentally unfit," he explains. Pratt says currently an individual can choose a doctor or insurance program that does not submit medical information into that government database -- but under President Obama's plan, a person would not have that option. "A mandate requiring every American to be insured by necessity will require the current anti-gun administration -- [people] like [HHS Secretary Kathleen] Sebelius, whoever's handling it -- to determine what constitutes a qualified health policy," he adds. "And more to the point, they will get to determine what health-related information, like gun information, will be put into the national database." The federal database Pratt is referring to was created by the economic stimulus package hastily approved in February.
