Thousands of people will be heading to Boston next weekend to protest government-run healthcare.
Boston "TEA Party" organizer Christen Varley tells OneNewsNow that the protest will be held Saturday, October 17, on the Boston Common from noon till 2 p.m. The event will feature conservative columnist Don Feder, Dr. Mildred Jefferson, co-founder of the National Right to Life Coalition, and many other national conservative figures. Massachusetts residents have been living under a state government-run healthcare system which is crumbling and losing money, says Varley. She believes federal lawmakers are foolish to think that they can run a national healthcare system based on Massachusetts' model. Varley notes that one aspect the federal government is copying is the mandate that all people must buy insurance or face stiff fines. She says that is not a wise approach. "To take that one step further and have the government demand that all residents go out and purchase health insurance is truly, in my opinion and the opinion of many people who will be attending the Tea Party, just kind of an abrogation of our freedom," says Varley. "We have the freedom to insure or not insure." Another piece of legislation the Tea Party will protest is the so-called "Massachusetts Pandemic Bill," a measure that will allegedly usher in marshal law if there is a pandemic crisis such as swine flu. If passed, that law would require mandatory vaccinations, and require citizens to snitch to officials if they observe questionable activities.
