A conservative media watchdog doesn't think it is appropriate for a member of President Obama's administration to refer to Mao Tse Tung as one of her favorite political philosophers.
Anita Dunn currently serves as President Obama's interim White House communications director. She also previously helped on his election campaign and was once featured on a 60 Minutes segment as one of Obama's top four advisors. Recently Dunn has become the mouthpiece for the administration's attacks on the Fox News Channel, saying it often operates almost as either the research arm or the communications arm of the Republican Party. However, earlier this month Fox's Glenn Beck played a clip of a speech Dunn made on June 5 to students at St. Andrews Episcopal School of Potomac, Maryland. This clip records Dunn saying, "The third lesson and tip actually come from two of my favorite political philosophers: Mao Tse Tung and Mother Theresa, [who are] not often coupled with each other." Tim Graham, director of media analysis at the Media Research Center, addresses her reference to Mao Tse Tung. "You cannot make a speech as a member of the White House or somebody who aspires to one day serve in the White House and call the murderous dictator of China one of your favorite political philosophers. You simply cannot do that," he reiterates. Furthermore, Graham does not buy the explanation Dunn offered for making the Mao reference. "Anita Dunn came out and tried to say about this clip, 'Well, I was being ironic.' I think anybody who watches the video is going to see that there wasn't a lot of irony there," he concludes.
