NY senator stands against proposal

A lone New York senator plans to wage war against the governor's homosexual "marriage" proposal.

Ruben DiazDemocratic State Senator Ruben Diaz of the Bronx explains why Governor David Paterson is pushing so hard when the measure has failed in the past. "The governor is desperate," says Diaz. "He needs the homosexual community's support; therefore, he has to do something this year to get them behind him."

Support is vital because next year is an election year, and according to the state lawmaker no one in the State Assembly or Senate will touch the issue. Diaz, however, is challenging the governor and others.

"So I'm telling him and telling all my colleagues in the Senate, 'If you are so committed to the issue, if you really believe in the issue, [and] if you are honest and sincere enough, bring it in next year,'" is his test for them.

That, he says, will give voters a chance to know who to support in the election and who to turn away. Diaz says he is willing to deal with it in an election year because his faith tells him to oppose homosexual marriage.  The senator also believes that New York voters want the issue on the ballot so they can decide it democratically -- rather than letting the legislature or the courts make the decision for them.
