Alaskans call for vote on parental consent

Alaska voters will have the chance to decide whether underage girls seeking an abortion should be required to notify their parents.

Jim Minnery (AFC)Jim Minnery, president of the Alaska Family Council (AFC), tells OneNewsNow the success of the petition drive can be attributed to some dedicated volunteers, regarding them as "750 people going gang busters." He reports that the group has "been able to gather 47,000 signatures, which is about 30 percent more than what we were actually required by the state of Alaska to gather."

The Division of Elections has 60 days to certify the signatures, but his hope is that it will be accomplished in less than 30 days. The state legislative session has begun, and it is a 90-day session.

The AFC president says quick certification of the signatures would allow lawmakers the chance to pass the parental consent law without scheduling an election "and hopefully not have a long, drawn-out public relations battle with Planned Parenthood and the ACLU. We can do that and we will do that, but our hope is that we can get this done legislatively, now that we've got 47,000 Alaskans to step forward and say, 'Enough is enough,'" he adds.

If that goal is not accomplished, the election on the matter would be held in August.
