'Balanced' treatment of global warming - how novel!

The South Dakota Legislature has passed a resolution calling for a "balanced approach for instruction in the public schools relating to global climate change."

State Rep. Don Kopp (South Dakota)Republican State Representative Don Kopp, the main sponsor of the resolution, tells OneNewsNow it is important that both sides of the global-warming debate be taught in South Dakota's public schools.

"Particularly [in] the western part of the state...a lot of the schools have been showing Al Gore's video, for an example, without anything else," he says in reference to An Inconvenient Truth. "Well, when kids graduate from high school and they believe that...by virtue of [their life] they're destroying the planet, that isn't much of a future to look forward to if you think you're part of the problem."

Al Gore warming smallKopp stresses that the resolution carries no legal weight over the school teacher. "They don't have to except the 'balance treatment' even," he explains. "If they decide they want to reject it, they can. It's a resolution; it's a suggestion."

The South Dakota lawmaker points out the resolution was basically a party-line vote that narrowly passed through both the House and Senate. He interprets that as an indicator that global warming is more of a political issue than it is a scientific issue.
