A New York City-based non-profit organization is categorically denying the accusation from a radical Islamic organization that it backs Republican presidential candidate John McCain.
The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) has asked the Federal Election Commission to investigate the Clarion Fund, which has distributed the controversial 2006 DVD Obsession: Radical Islam's War Against the West. Clarion Fund spokesman Gregory Ross says CAIR's accusation that his organization is tied to the McCain campaign is "ludicrous." "Totally ludicrous; totally untrue; 100 percent false. We're an independent 501(c)3 that has no political ties. By nature, the tax codes do not allow us to be political at all," Ross explains. "This movie was made two years ago before anybody decided to become a political candidate." Ross claims, on the other hand, that CAIR has had questionable ties. "CAIR [is] a group that the government has identified as an unindicted co-conspirator in terrorism financing," Ross contends. "And the Department of Justice has termed CAIR as a part of the Muslim Brotherhood and a Hamas-affiliated conspiracy in the U.S. -- so it has to be viewed as highly suspect." Instead of making false accusations, Ross says his organization would love for CAIR to use all of its energy to denounce the terrorists that are truly out there, and also to do a little housecleaning on their own side.
