China world mapA Pentagon advisor and senior Army strategist says the release of a Chinese "white paper" indicates that Beijing has increased its capability to launch nuclear missiles against the United States or any other potential adversary around the world.

The paper, published in late January, confirms that China's army, navy, and air force are all undertaking projects to speed up their modernization. It said that Beijing's growing submarine force is equipped with nuclear-powered strategic missile submarines. Lt. Colonel Bob Maginnis (USA-Ret.) says that means China has developed an effective triad.

Bob Maginnis"They have a reach anywhere in the world with a counter to perhaps a threat that we or other nations would pose. They already have an intercontinental ballistic missile capability on the land. They have bombers that can drop nuclear weapons. And so now with their submarine fleet almost the size of the United States' submarine fleet, they have really a credible triad," he contends. "So things are really being ratcheted up by the Chinese."

Maginnis notes the Chinese have poured a lot of money into developing a blue-water navy, with a large and quiet submarine fleet that can threaten U.S. strategic assets.
