A retired Army general says recent foreign trips by President Barack Obama have demonstrated that he is weak when dealing with national security issues.
During his recently concluded two-day visit to Russia, Obama -- along with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev -- announced that they were determined by year's end to negotiate a new nuclear arms treaty that would slash both countries' arsenals by about one-third. Maj. Gen. Jerry Curry (USA-Ret.) is the author of From Private to General and served 34 years as an Army aviator, paratrooper, and ranger. He was not impressed with Obama's performance in Moscow. "He is continuing to come across as a very weak leader. In his other overseas trips, he has essentially groveled in front of the other leaders and the other countries of the world," Curry says. "And he is doing essentially the same thing with Russia." Curry says Obama reminds him of former President Jimmy Carter. "Jimmy Carter just about destroyed the military in terms of removing budgeting, removing procurement of new weapons systems -- and President Obama seems like he's going down the very same road," Curry contends. "He cut a billion dollars out of our missile defense R&D efforts that we're trying for new missiles to protect our country." At the rate Obama is going, Curry believes the United States will end up with a hollow Army, a hollow Navy, and a hollow Air Force -- effectively causing the U.S. to become a punching bag for countries like Russia and China.
