A terrorism expert and critic of Islam says President Barack Obama is being very naive in pursuing an "axis of engagement" with countries like Syria.
When former President George W. Bush used the phrase "axis of evil" in a speech describing Iraq, Iran, and North Korea, he received a great deal of criticism from the left. Now in an effort to rid the country of the Bush foreign policy, President Obama has started what is being called an "axis of engagement" by reaching out for dialogue with rogue states. In just one example, Obama recently reestablished diplomatic relations with Syria, which has continued to be a safe haven for terrorists. Robert Spencer, the director of Jihad Watch, believes reestablishing diplomatic ties with Damascus is a bad idea. "It's extraordinarily naive. It's part of his overall assumption that he can reach out to the Islamic world and show that America is not its enemy and then they will respond in kind. We've already seen there's no corresponding outreach from the Islamic world, no response to his overtures, except to ratchet up the demands," he suggests. "He's only going to give the impression that the United States is weak." Spencer says Obama's strategy is almost certain to backfire.
