Communist Chinese company launches second buyout bid for U.S. company

Chinese flagCongressman Thad McCotter says monetary greed is motivating a communist Chinese company to launch another attempt to buy out an American manufacturer known for its computer network infrastructure products.

Bain Capital and the Chinese company Huawei plan to resubmit an application seeking approval for a proposed buyout of U.S. technology group 3Com, which makes anti-hacking software for the military. Bain and Huawei recently withdrew their takeover application with the Committee on Foreign Investment in the U.S. (CFIUS) after lawmakers warned the proposed merger threatened national security. Huawei has ties to the Chinese army, which has conducted cyber attacks on the Pentagon.

Congressman McCotter (R-Michigan) -- a chief critic of the 3Com deal -- is denouncing the newest merger attempt. "The clear indication from the CFIUS review commission was [that the deal was] a ... stealth assault on national security and should not be approved," McCotter maintains. "There is no way a private entity can come in and guarantee the security and sovereignty of the American people. That is the responsibility of the federal government acting on their behalf."

The Michigan lawmaker argues that one factor is driving the proposed merger. "It's about the money. Crudely put, that's what their motivations are," McCotter says. "And I think it's incumbent upon people within positions of responsibility ... to make sure that America's national security is not for sale. I would argue it's an intrinsically flawed deal to begin with given the nature of Huawei and what they do."

McCotter says he may send another letter to CFIUS protesting the deal if the government panel appears to be changing its mind. Huawei's chief marketing officer recently used an expletive to describe McCotter's concern that the deal threatens U.S. national security.
