A senior Army strategist and Pentagon advisor says the Army Major who went on a shooting rampage at Fort Hood yesterday provided some telltale signs that should have been acted upon by the chain of command.
Federal authorities have seized the computer belonging to the suspected Fort Hood shooter, and they are using it to search for clues revealing what may have led to the reason behind Thursday's military massacre that left 13 people dead and 30 wounded. A United States law enforcement official said that Major Nidal Malik Hasan's apartment in Killeen, Texas was searched early Friday. It was not immediately known whether FBI agents found anything suspicious on Hasan's computer files. Lt. Col. Bob Maginnis (USA-Ret.) says disturbing revelations in the FBI's findings are coming to the surface. "[Hasan] put comments on some blogs, and I've seen some of those blogs which are pretty implicating that he sees Jihad as something that is called upon him," reports Maginnis. "Now whether or not all that is true, I don't know yet. However, another piece [of suspicion] is supposedly that he yelled 'Allah Akbar' as he stood on the table at the processing center and fired at point blank at as many people as he possibly could. Now if that's all true, [it's] very distressing. [There is] a lot of tragedy here, [and] a lot of markers should have been identified long ago. Something very special should have been taken to kick him out of the military, [but that] didn't happen." Maginnis believes it is clear that Fort Hood authorities did not grasp the seriousness of Hasan's complaints and behavior. He further feels it is naive for the services to neglect watching for and acting upon markers of disloyalty.
