Next month, voters in Michigan will be weighing in on a bill that an education watchdog group says could elevate union contracts above the law.
Kyle Olson of the Education Action Group (EAG) says Proposal 2 could include a provision that states union contracts must be kept secret, which would exempt them from the Freedom of Information Act.
"It gives collective bargaining the authority to trump state law, which is something that at least we have never seen before," Olson states.
His hope is that as the public becomes more aware of what Prop. 2 includes, its support will continue to slide.
"There was a poll recently done, it was probably two weeks ago now, that showed that … 48 percent actually supported the initiative," the EAG spokesman cites. "So, it has real problems, and my guess is as more people find out, its support will continue to erode."
Olson adds that if Prop. 2 were to pass, it would be possible for public schools to get away with all types of waste and budgetary abuse.
