After celebrating her 88th birthday, Phyllis Schlafly asserts that she will remain active in the conservative movement, where there is much to be done.

Phyllis SchlaflyPhyllis Schlafly, founder of the Eagle Forum, celebrated her 88th birthday this week without missing a beat in impacting the conservative movement. She is reflecting on some milestones.

"Well, one of the major accomplishments is certainly defeating the Equal Rights Amendment," she notes. "If that had been ratified, we would have had same-sex marriage 25 years ago, because the word used in that amendment was 'sex,' not women, and said you couldn't discriminate on account of sex. It's just that simple."

She attributes the success to grassroots conservatives rising up "against the entire powers that be."

Another significant accomplishment was bringing the Republican Party's attention to life issues.

"When I started out under the Nixon administration, the Republican Party was pro-abortion," she remembers. "And little by little, with knock-down-drag-out political battles at convention after convention, we have now made the Republican Party pro-life."

Schafly stresses there is still much work to be done, especially in light of the impact of the Obama administration. She is now off to Tampa to serve on the Republican National Convention platform committee.
