Trump and wife MelaniaThe head of an immigration enforcement think tank says the recent effort by Democrats to make something of Melania Trump's immigration history is nothing more than gossip.

It started when the left-leaning Politico published an article questioning Mrs. Trump's immigration status. Then U.S. Congressman Xavier Becerra (D-California) tried to make hay about it on Fox News Channel – but was rebuked by former House Speaker Newt Gingrich.

Gingrich: "This is the only immigrant in America you're worried about. I think it's amazing that the one person you decide to pick on happens to be the wife of Donald Trump."

Becerra: "It's interesting that the immigrant basher is unwilling to explain how his wife, an immigrant, gained her status."

Gingrich: "He's not an immigrant basher. His mother was a legal immigrant; his wife is a legal immigrant; he employs legal immigrants. He just likes his immigrants to be legal."

The executive director of the Center for Immigration Studies says for one thing, it is virtually impossible to find out about Mrs. Trump's immigration saga using the records available through the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.

Krikorian

"The records are so bad, so incompetently kept that this is a question that really can't be answered one way or the other," says Mark Krikorian. "And my point here about it being irresponsible to discuss this is that the Democrats are using this is a club, but there's no answer to it; there's no way they can ever say yes or no. So it really is just gossip."

It's time, says Krikorian, to move on from this story and discuss real issues like dealing with sanctuary cities and stemming the tide of illegal aliens crossing the border into the U.S.

Krikorian's advice notwithstanding, Reuters reports that, according to her husband, Melania Trump will hold a news conference in the coming weeks to address the immigration controversy.
