Prominent evangelical leaders are weighing in on the accusations of sexual misconduct against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh.
Dr. Christine Blasey Ford is the woman behind the accusations that go back more than 35 years to when both she and Kavanaugh were in high school. Her allegations have left his nomination dangling in the balance. She has now been given a Friday morning deadline to inform Congress if she intends to testify before a panel on Monday.
Pastor Robert Jeffress of First Baptist-Dallas, one of President Donald Trump's most ardent supporters, says Kavanaugh is well qualified to be a Supreme Court Justice. As a husband, father of two daughters, and grandfather to a little girl, Jeffress takes any accusation of sexual assault seriously – but he tells OneNewsNow that he detects more politics than legitimate concern for an alleged victim at work here.
"I cannot say for sure who's telling the truth in this situation," says Jeffress. "But one thing I know with absolute certainty is that Democrats don't care who is telling the truth."
He notes that each time Republicans make an effort to comply with Democrats' demands, they move the goalposts. "Susan Collins [Republican senator from Maine] said that she wanted each of the parties involved to be questioned by the attorney of the other party," notes the pastor. "Apparently Judge Kavanaugh was agreeable to that – but that's the moment Christine Ford said, Oh no, wait a minute. We need to have an investigation first."
Franklin Graham of Samaritan's Purse also sees politics at work. "I think they've pulled it out here at the 11th hour for all political purposes," says the evangelist. "It's just a shame that a person like Judge Kavanaugh, who has a stellar record, that somebody can bring something up that he did when he was a teenager close to 40 years ago. That's not relevant."
"We've got to look at a person's life and what they have done as an adult and [then ask] are they qualified for this position," Graham adds. "This is just an attempt to smear him."
The president of American Family Association agrees. "This is all about one thing – stopping a judge who is a constitutionalist from being confirmed to the Supreme Court," says Tim Wildmon. "The Democrats will do anything and everything to stop a Trump nominee, and they should be ashamed of themselves."
