Like most types of advertising, a billboard is designed to turn heads. But one in Dallas is drawing some unintended reaction.
The ad from The Afiya Center says: "Black women take care of their families by taking care of themselves. Abortion is self-care." As one might expect, the billboard has resulted in a lot of comments, many of which are furious, according to the NBC affiliate in Dallas-Fort Worth.
"We wanted to create conversation," Afiya executive director Marsha Jones told the television station. "I will be honest and say, in a million years I didn't think that it would be this visceral."
According to Jones, the billboard was never meant to promote abortion in any kind of way, but rather to affirm post-abortive women after the Black Pro-Life Coalition erected a billboard this summer saying "Abortion is not healthcare" – adding, "It hurts women and murders their babies."
Pastor Stephen Broden, a member of the National Black Pro-Life Coalition, tells OneNewsNow that people need to hear the pro-life message.
"What we know about abortion is being processed through the voice of Planned Parenthood – and not enough of the pro-life message is being communicated in our community because black conservatives and black pro-life conservatives are often ignored by both the liberal left media and also the right side," Pastor Broden explains.
"So we put up a billboard because we believe this issue is absolutely essential for us to have information and education on so we can push back against abortion and the abortion industry and the scourge it's having on the life of our community."
Stacy Washington of Project 21 and host of the "Stacy on the Right" radio program recommends people forgo something such as a trip to the coffee shop today and instead use those funds to donate to their local crisis pregnancy center.
"Last I checked, self-care is a manicure and pedicure or an afternoon out with friends," says Washington. "Abortion has eliminated almost 40 percent of the black population in America since Roe v. Wade."
