college student at deskA mathematics professor at an Illinois school is bizarrely claiming that skills in algebra and geometry are perpetuating "unearned privilege" among whites.

University of Illinois Professor Rochelle Gutierrez, herself teaching in the area of empirical sciences, has written that teachers must be aware of the "politics that mathematics brings into society."

"This professor is joining with others to argue that it is in fact racist to be able to prove your argument, to have evidence to support it, to rely on logic," says Horace Cooper of Project 21, a national leadership network of black conservatives.

Cooper says Gutierrez's idea that "things cannot be known objectively; they must be known subjectively" has no academic merit.

"This hypothesis of hers is so shallow, so insufficient, it's shameful," he submits. "And what I would point out is it is merely racism masquerading as social critique."

According to Campus Reform, Gutierrez also contends that mathematics itself "operates as whiteness."
