A U.S. senator has proposed a solution to fund President Donald Trump's border wall.
Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) has introduced the Ensuring Lawful Collection of Hidden Assets to Provide Order, or EL CHAPO Act.
"El Chapo" (pictured below) is the nickname for Joaquin Guzman, a notorious Mexican drug lord who headed the Sinaloa Cartel and who is now facing charges in the U.S.
Cruz's bill would reserve any forfeited funds to the U.S. government for "El Chapo" and other drug lords for border security, including the completion of the wall along the U.S.-Mexico border.
Trump made building a border wall a campaign promise but that plans appears to be in doubt.
During a recent appearance on Fox News, Cruz said confiscating the drug lord's massive fortune is a way to get Mexico to pay for the wall.
"The estimates are that his criminal fortune is roughly worth about $14 billion,” Cruz said. "Coincidentally, the estimates for the cost to build a wall range from $14 billion to $20 billion."
Cruz says it's only right that El Chapo and others of his ilk pay for the wall.
“They're smuggling narcotics. They're engaged in human trafficking," he said. "And there is a sense of justice, a sense of this is what's right, to say the people who are violating the border like crazy - we should use their ill-gotten gains to finally build the wall and to finally ensure we have the assets to secure our border."
