Trump on stump (new pic)The 2018 elections are fast-approaching and a longtime conservative says Republicans seem to be their own worst enemies - worse than a biased media, determined Democrats, and the motivated "Resistance" movement.

Among the so-called Republican "establishment" in Washington, D.C., there is a "defeatist" attitude even when they are in power, says Gary Bauer of American Values.

"And even when they get a majority, it's like herding cats," says Bauer, a former Reagan official. "They have a hard time staying on message."

Bauer, Gary (American Values)Contrast that ongoing frustration with then-candidate Donald Trump, who gathered a coalition of non-Republican voters in 2016 that helped him win Rustbelt states such as Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Michigan.

It remains unclear, says Bauer, if those Trump-supporting voters will show up at the polls when Trump himself is not on the ballot.

"What the Republican Party has to make sure happens," he advises, "is that the typical coalition – free-market conservatives, strong national defense conservative, Evangelicals, pro-life people - that they show up."

Adding to the concern, there has been a wave of retirements by Republicans in the House of Representatives. Open seats, Bauer warns, are vulnerable seats.
