The lives of an estimated 60 million children have been terminated in the womb since 1973 when the Supreme Court legalized abortion in Roe v. Wade. That tragedy is why the Pro-Life Action League, Citizens for a Pro-Life Society, and Priests for Life have organized the fifth annual National Day of Remembrance for aborted children.

League executive director Eric Scheidler explains that prayer vigils will be held at 50 known burial sites for the babies.

"The vast majority are never buried," Scheidler says. "They're simply flushed down the toilet or put in a food processor or incinerated or in some other way disposed of like garbage. We will refuse to believe that they're garbage. We recognize them as beloved brothers and sisters, children made in the image and likeness of God."

Aside from the 50 burial places, prayer will also be conducted at over 100 memorial sites nationwide – and the public is urged to attend.

"We go to these places to pray – to pray in mourning for the loss of these children," Scheidler adds, "to pray for healing for all who have been affected by abortion, to pray that those who need to will seek forgiveness and God's mercy, and that our society will be healed from the wounds of abortion."

The National Day of Remembrance has grown each of its five years, last year attracting over 5,000 participants.
